Björn Jonsson at ABB on the partnership with SaltX: “The partnership fits perfectly”

This july it was made official that ABB steps in as technical partner to SaltX. As a technical partner ABB’s history and expertise in process optimization as well as solutions for automation and control systems, motors and drive systems, process instrumentation and smart electrification will complement SaltX unique technology.

In 2020 ABB released their Sustainability Strategy 2030 which focuses on the areas where the company can make the biggest impact – reducing carbon emissions, preserving resources, and promoting social progress. The partnership with SaltX is of essence in reaching those goals. “The partnership fits perfectly with our commitment to shift to sustainable, renewable energy and embed circularity in everything we do to enable a low carbon society” says Björn Jonsson, HUB Division Manager Process Industries, North Europe ABB.

Besides from being two companies with the same incentive, it is two companies that now complement each other in its initial project, when the first joint system shall be installed in the Luleå pilot. ABB’s solutions for automation and control systems, motors and drive systems, process instrumentation and smart electrification will complement the unique features of SaltX’ technology, which enables SaltX to take full responsibility for the energy storage in the pilot plants.

“SaltX is already a strong player with incredibly high competence. ABB can be described as the technology enabler for this project which is entirely owned and operated by SaltX. We focus on the areas where we can contribute and complement SaltX’s expertise, and that is providing first-class process and control systems as a start” Jonsson comments on the collaboration.

The pilot plant in Luleå is a collaboration between Luleå Energi, Lulekraft and Swerim and it is positive to see companies that has the courage to take the leap, according to Björn Jonsson: “It is required that energy and industrial companies that have the courage to make a strategic decision to build energy storage facilities within their areas of activity.”

In 2018 Bloomberg predicted a USD 620 billion investment opportunity in the energy storage market, as energy storage will be one of the key components in achieving the sustainability goals. To do so, cities and the heavy industries will have to transform, which makes the Luleå pilot one of its kind. It will be the first plant that uses residual gas/heat from steel production to charge an energy storage.

SaltX is proud to collaborate with a company like ABB and is looking forward to making a difference in the transformation to sustainable, renewable energy.
