SaltX enters industrialization – invests SEK 50 million in a new demonstration facility

After successful and verified tests for manufacturing climate-neutral lime and a "pre-order" of the first factory from SMA Mineral, the company is now investing circa fifty million in a demonstration plant to industrialize the technology for electric calcination.

Since the fall of 2021, SaltX Technology has been conducting test operations for its electric calcination technology EAC (Electric Arc Calciner). In 2022, the company scaled up its operations to a pilot facility. After successful tests to produce climate-neutral lime and cement clinker, as well as several orders for material tests, the company is now building a large-scale industrial demonstration plant in Hofors. The facility will be ready in the autumn of 2023.

SaltX's EAC technology electrifies an industrial process called calcination, a heating process used primarily to manufacture lime and cement clinker. The EAC technology replaces fossil fuels with renewable electricity and separates and isolates the carbon dioxide released from the limestone during high-temperature heating. The solution enables a manufacturing process completely free of carbon dioxide emissions.

The facility will be located in the historic industrial town of Hofors, with a long and proud tradition of steel manufacturing. Carl-Johan Linér, CEO of SaltX says:

"The facility will have a capacity of 2MW, which is ten times higher than the previous pilot. This is an offensive investment for us and is a result of the market showing great interest in the potential of the technology.”

The investment and construction of the demonstration plant have the highest priority and play an essential role in the technology's industrialization. Eric Jacobson, Chief Commercial Officer at SaltX:

"Together with customers and partners, the goal is to set a new standard for electric calcination. The demonstration plant is a critical step in our commercialization. With this investment, I look forward to accelerating the development of the technology and increasing the pace of the green industrial transition.”

The demonstration facility will be built on Ovako's premises in Hofors in collaboration with ScanArc and ABB. Construction will start immediately, and the new facility is planned to be ready in autumn 2023.

About calcination:
Calcination is a process in which solid materials are changed by heating to a high temperature but not to its melting point. The purpose of calcination is usually to drive off a substance, bring about a phase transition, or bring about a chemical reaction, often oxidation or reduction. Calcination often makes the material harder, more stable, more reactive, or in some other way produces a desirable product – calcination is, therefore, sometimes considered a purification process.
