SaltX project in Luleå takes a new direction towards the steel industry’s green transition

At the beginning of 2021, the energy storage company SaltX Technology began a collaboration with LuleKraft, Luleå Energi, and the metal research institute Swerim, to reduce CO2 emissions for the industrial sector in the region. A pre-study has been carried out, that clearly shows that SaltX energy storage can increase energy efficiency and lower climate impact for the steel industry.

The industry and energy actors in the region have decided to further investigate future energy demand and supply needs. As a consequence of this new direction, the planned pilot plant will be postponed. Instead, SaltX intensifies its work for the steel industry's green transition. Carl-Johan Linér, CEO of SaltX:

– SaltX cannot proceed with the planned installation of a pilot plant as the priorities have shifted towards green steel. But we are happy to continue working and deepening our collaboration with Swerim on this matter, where we see that our technical solutions and knowledge can contribute to this exciting and important initiative.

SaltX’s solutions for long- and short-term energy storage make it possible to utilize surplus energy from the steel manufacturing process and reduce global CO2 emissions. Swerim works intensively in this field and sees many future possibilities for this technology. Mikael Larsson, Business Area Manager at Swerim says:

– We are convinced that energy storage systems such as SaltX technology have an important role to play in making future steel production fossil-free. Energy storage also has the potential to be applied for energy optimization in many other heavy industries where we at Swerim are involved.

SaltX and Swerim are now focusing on a further study on energy storage for the steel industry in Sweden. The dialogue about Luleå City's future energy system with LuleKraft and Luleå Energi, will continue with the ambition of resuming the cooperation as the new conditions are clarified.
