SaltX Technology is a Swedish energy storage company aiming to play a vital role in the transition to renewable energy. The company is now partnering with ABB to accelerate the decarbonization of cement- and quicklime industries through electrification.
Last year SaltX started the development of a proprietary charging reactor to meet the increasing demand from the industrial sector for EnerStore (SaltX energy storage solution). As presented in a press release in February 2022, the company mentioned the possible alternative usage of the charging reactor for calcination, and not exclusively for energy storage.
SaltX and ABB are now exploring the opportunity to use the technology for other industrial processes reducing CO2 emissions in the production of quick lime, cement, and other calcination processes.
– A key factor for our charging technology is the ability to reach very high temperatures, and we believe it can support industries on a large scale. The results we have obtained so far are exceeding our expectations and we are pleased to take steps together with ABB and extend our cooperation, says Carl-Johan Linér, CEO of SaltX Technology.
The tests performed show promising results and the company is now strengthening its cooperation with ABB towards upscaling and commercialization.

Calcination is a thermal treatment of a solid chemical compound whereby the compound is raised to high temperatures without melting. The purpose of calcination is removing volatile substances, oxidizing a portion of mass, or rendering them friable – calcination is therefore sometimes considered a process of purification.
A typical example is the manufacture of lime from limestone. In this process the limestone is brought to a temperature high enough to expel the carbon dioxide, producing the lime in a highly friable or easily powdered condition.
